Two weeks ago, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton handed over wolf management to the state of Idaho -- the same state that just a few years ago passed a resolution calling for the elimination of wolves "by any means necessary."
And just last week, Idaho officials announced a draft plan to kill up to 50 wolves to improve elk hunting in the upper Clearwater Basin. That's 75% of the wolf population in one National Forest.
Secretary Norton is the Bush administration official charged with protecting wolves and helping them to recover in their historic range - yet by handing over wolf management duties to Idaho at this time, she has given the state a license to kill wolves. Take action today!
Clearly, Secretary Norton, who is charged with protecting our nation's natural resources, is not doing her job when it comes to wolf protection and conservation. In fact, too many of her actions have further threatened America's wolves.
Norton has refused to stop the aerial gunning of wolves in Alaska that has led to the brutal deaths of more than 400 wolves, with 18 killed in the last two months alone. She tried to prematurely weaken protections for endangered wolves in the lower 48 states-- a move Defenders of Wildlife blocked in court. And she's working with Congressman Richard Pombo and others to gut the Endangered Species Act, the landmark law that's provided key protections for wolves and allowed their recovery.
Take action today - join us in letting Secretary Norton know that we expect her to follow her mission and the law of the land. Urge Secretary Norton to do her job as leader of the Department of the Interior to protect America's gray wolves and recover the species throughout its historic range.
